What is a glow-bar igniter?
A silicon-carbide igniter at the oven burner: it glows red-hot, and the current it passes is what opens the oven gas valve. Viking Repair Redmond, (425) 585-2373.

Why a bright glow proves little
As the bar heats, its resistance falls and current rises. In Viking’s free-standing gas range manual, a heated bimetal arm in the gas valve flexes open at roughly 3.2 to 3.6 amps.
A failing bar can glow brightly yet pass under 3.2 amps, so the valve opens only part way. The slow-preheat long read goes further.
Stop and call if
- The igniter glows but the burner never lights, or lights late with a whoomp.
- Gas smell: go outside first, then call the gas utility or 911. Never light the burner by hand.

Is it the same as the cooktop's spark igniter?
No. The cooktop burners light by spark; the glow-bar sits at the oven burner and doubles as the valve's trigger. Viking's VGSC306 self-clean gas ranges spark-light the oven burner too, with flame sensing and an ignition lockout after repeated failures.
Can I test a glow-bar myself?
