What does the Viking preheat indicator light mean?
It is a heat-demand lamp: lit while the thermostat asks for heat, dark once your setting is reached, then on and off as the oven holds it. Viking Repair Redmond, (425) 585-2373.
The knobs an oven is set from. The indicator beside them reports one thing only: whether the thermostat is still asking for heat.

Check, in this order

Set bake to 350°F and look at the lamp straight away.
pass lit: heat is being called for, go on fail dark as the oven warms: a lamp or wiring fault

Thermometer on the centre rack: read it when the lamp first goes dark.
pass near 350°F: lamp and thermostat agree fail far below: the thermostat side switches off early

Keep baking and glance at the lamp every few minutes.
pass on, off, on again: the oven is holding fail lit throughout: the preheat light never goes out page applies

Lit, dark, cycling
Viking’s free-standing gas range service manual gives each oven thermostat its own indicator, lit during bake or broil and switching with every cycle.
So its first dark moment marks the end of preheat; each relight after that is the oven topping up, not a warning.
Stop and call if
- The oven heats but the lamp stays dark in every mode.
- The lock light is still on after the oven has gone cold.

Is the clean indicator the same lamp?
No. Self-clean models carry a separate clean indicator. On Viking's VGSC306 self-clean gas ranges it lights when self-clean is chosen and stays on until the cavity drops below 575°F, so it can still glow well after the cycle has ended.
Can the lamp look normal while the oven is not?
Yes. The lamp only repeats the thermostat's decision; it measures nothing. An oven sensor reading high puts it out early, and a weak glow-bar keeps it lit. When the lamp and a rack thermometer disagree, ring Viking Repair Redmond on (425) 585-2373.
